Individual therapy is for people who want to make significant changes in their behavioral patterns and how they operate in the world and respond to difficult experiences. For this to happen, a trusting, compassionate, and collaborative environment and therapeutic relationship must be established and clear, explicit goals must be set. Patterns of thinking, emotions, and behavior are explored authentically, spontaneously, and with the full spectrum of humanity in mind. Think of therapy as a real relationship/setting where different ways of being and doing can be explored and refined and translated to other relationships and situations in life.
Mental health counseling is for people who are affected significantly by a situational stressor. So while it may not be warranted or feel necessary to change your behavioral patterns on a deeper level or in a lasting way, mental health counseling builds new coping skills, identifies new solutions to problems, highlights strengths, and explores conflict resolution skills.
Consultation is basically sophisticated advice — receiving recommendations for which path to take or what to do based on your unique psychology and life circumstances.
For therapy, mental health counseling, or consultation, Sessions typically last 45-50 minutes, every 1-2 weeks. Your goals can often be achieved in as few as several sessions or as long as several years, depending on your specific needs and personal goals.
